Membership

There are five types of membership within the Cancer Therapy and Research Center:

Scientific Member
Associate Member
Clinical Member
Affiliate Member
Honarary Member

Major Criterion for Membership

The major criterion is an active interest in cancer-related research and cancer care. This interest is evidenced by active participation in research, teaching, clinical investigation, clinical care, cancer control and community outreach activity.

Membership Application

To apply for membership an individual must complete and submit the online application. The application will be forwarded to the Scientific Leadership Committee for discussion and to the Cancer Center Director for final decision. Notification of the decision, membership category and program assignment will be sent via email to the applicant.

Categories of Membership

Scientific Membership is the developed category for individuals holding academic appointments at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio or an approved affiliate institute who has a major research interest in cancer as evidenced by cancer related peer-reviewed funded research, as recognized by the National Cancer Institute. Newly appointed investigators without peer-reviewed grant funding or senior investigators with a consistent record of funding who may have a temporary lapse in funding can be appointed to this category of membership for one year. Generally, scientific members are principal investigators on a peer-reviewed grant, but co-investigators on funded peer-reviewed grants who play a substantive role may be eligible for scientific membership based on the recommendation of the Program Leader.

Associate Membership is the category developed for junior faculty, post-docs, graduate students, or individuals with an active interest in cancer research who do not meet the criteria for Scientific Member. This category of member is suitable for cancer faculty who conduct non peer-review funded research or who facilitate the research of Scientific Members by providing key services for and/or collaborations with other Institute members. Postdoctoral Fellows who are being trained in laboratories of Scientific Members are eligible for Postdoctoral Associate Membership. Students in the Graduate Program in Cancer Biology and graduate students who are being trained in laboratories of Scientific Members are eligible for Graduate Student Associate Membership. In order to qualify, these students should have passed the written and oral qualifying exams and be classified as Doctoral Candidates. Membership for Postdoctoral/Graduate Students shall be nominated by their respective mentor.

Clinical Membership is the category developed for individuals whose primary professional activities include patient care and active participation in multidisciplinary clinical team meetings. Such individuals must be active in enrolling patients onto clinical trials.

Affiliate Membership is the category developed for referring physicians from organizations partnered with our cancer center. It is open to qualified individuals who are physicians working in support of cancer research and clinical care.

Emeritus Membership is the category developed for former cancer center members who have retired from the university but who continue to serve in an advisory role to the cancer center.
